Sogetsu Ikebana Textbook Courses

Complete your Sogetsu Ikebana textbooks, via our online course modules. You can complete your textbooks at your own pace and have your teacher review your work via the online portal and provide feedback so that you can pass your textbooks in order to apply for your Sogetsu certifications.

Following the completion of each course you may apply through your teacher to receive your certificate from the Sogetsu Headquarters.

Complete your certificates

Completing your certificates as a student can provide you with recognition from other ikebana artists, and give you a sense of accomplishment and achievement. Once all certificates are completed, you can also apply to become a teacher.

Study in your own time

These courses are available completely through the online learning portal, where your teacher will review your work and provide feedback. This online program makes getting your certificates convenient for anyone no matter the time or place.

Weekly online study group

Join our online weekly study group to get live feedback from your teacher on your arrangements, and discuss your questions with other students from around the world.

IKEBANA ANYWHERE, ANYTIME

Ikebana can be studied, anywhere, anytime and with any materials. Our online courses allow you to study at any time of day, from anywhere, and complete your textbooks through the online portal.

Course 1: Kakei I

20 Lessons in about 6 months.

The basics of Ikebana are studied through a method called Kakei-ho. Upon completion, application can be made for The First Certificate (Yonkyu). Please note the certificate is an additional option, and the fee is not included in the course.

$400 for 20 lessons or pay 6 monthly installments of $75 per month.

Course 2: Kakei II

20 Lessons in about 6 months.

As an extension of basic Kakei, variation styles are studied. Upon completion, application can be made for The Second Certificate (Sankyu). Please note the certificate is an additional option, and the fee is not included in the course.

Course 3: Composition and Line, Color and Mass

20 Lessons in about 6 months.

20 Lessons in about 6 months. The new stage of free style arrangement begins, apart from Kakei-ho. Upon completion, application can be made for The Third Certificate (Nikyu). Please note the certificate is an additional option, and the fee is not included in the course.

$400 for 20 lessons or pay 6 monthly installments of $75 per month.

Course 4: Material and Space

20 Lessons in about 6 months.

A higher level of expression is mastered by deepening your understanding of the material and the space. Upon completion, application can be made for The Fourth Certificate (Ikkyu). Please note the certificate is an additional option, and the fee is not included in the course.

$400 for 20 lessons or pay 6 monthly installments of $75 per month.

Course 5: Technique and Creation

30 Lessons in about 10 months.

This is the final textbook and upon completion of Curriculum 5, application can be made for Teacher’s Diploma Fourth Grade (the first stage of teacher’s diploma). Please note the certificate is an additional option, and the fee is not included in the course.

$600 for 30 lessons or pay 10 monthly installments of $75 per month.

This kit includes the basic essentials needed for any beginner Ikebana student. All items in the kit are purchased in Japan. 

  • Hasami: Traditional ikebana flower scissors. Suitable for cutting thick branches.
  • 2 x Kenzans:  The name kenzan (剣山) literally means sword mountain. This object is used in Moribana arrangements to hold flowers in place. Two sizes are provided in this kit.
  • Nageire vase: One basic cylinder tall vase suitable to practise your nageire arrangements.
  • Moribana vase: One basic moribana low vase to practise your moribana arrangements.
  • Textbook: Book 1 & 2 of the Sogetsu Ikebana arrangements. The classes in the textbook can be marked off by your teacher, and when completed, your teacher can apply for you to receive your certificates from the headquarters in Tokyo.
